The Bible
A recent survey showed that nearly two-thirds of Americans believe the Bible holds the answers to "all or most of life's basic questions." In spite of that, pollster George Gallup has called us "a nation of biblical illiterates." Only fifty percent of American adults know the title of even one Gospel. Most cannot name the first book of the Bible.
Beyond any doubt, the Bible is the most influential book ever written. It is the best-selling book of all time. According to one estimate, Shakespeare alluded to Scripture nearly 1,300 times.
It is a book of poetry, historical narrative, symbolism, letters, prayers, prophecy, genealogy, parables. But our faith is that it is God-breathed. It is the most unique book ever written.
The great Bible scholar, A.W. Tozer, wrote, "The Bible is not an end in itself, but a means to bring men to an intimate and satisfying knowledge of God, that they may enter into Him, that they may delight in His Presence, may taste and know the inner sweetness of the very God Himself in the core and center of their hearts."
The Psalmist affirmed, "Your word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path." (Psalm 119: 105)
I encourage you today to open the Bible and spend a few moments reading it. By doing so, may we discover God's precious light upon our path.
