Letting Go is Hard

July 28, 2014

Letting go is hard.

Personally, I am pretty slow in deleting the names of deceased friends from my Iphone. I had a close friend in north Louisiana who died a year and half ago. But her name is still right there, on my phone. All I have to do is press "delete," but I can’t do it. Not yet.

We hold on tightly to memories. We sometimes have a difficult time letting go. I sure do. Grief has no timetable to it.

I once heard a minister callously say to somebody in grief, "It’s time to get over it." I wanted to say, "Who are you, Dr. Phil? Who made you the expert on the grieving timetable?" Some people grieve for a month. And some grieve for a year or five years or a lifetime.

What is the answer? Grief counseling? Therapy? Faith?

There is great value in all three. But I just know that in spite of it all, sometimes it is hard letting go. Really hard.

I pray that God will bring peace and comfort to anyone who is reading this today who is struggling with grief.

The Old Testament affirms, "God heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds." (Psalm 147:3)

Jesus said, "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted." (Matthew 5:4)

I believe that with all of my heart. But the fact  still remains. Letting go is tough. It really is..
