He kept a journal for most of his adult life. In this journal he wrote about attending a religious gathering on New Years Eve in 1738, at Fetters Lane in London. It was a prayer meeting, a night watch vigil, to bring in the New Year.
When they were praying, something life-changing took place for John Wesley. He later called it his personal Day of Pentecost. Here is what he wrote in his journal:
“On Monday morning, January 1, 1739, Mr. Hall and my brother Charles were present in Fetters Lane, with about sixty of our brethren. At about three in the morning, as we were continuing instant in prayer, the power of God came mightily upon us insomuch that many cried out for exceeding joy and many fell down to the ground. As soon as we were recovered a little from that awe and amazement at the presence of His majesty, we broke out with one voice, ‘we praise Thee, O God, and we acknowledge Thee to be the Lord.’” (Journal of John Wesley, Volume 1)
The Spirit of God touched John Wesley in a way that he never forgot. The same thing can happen to us.
In the Old Testament book of Jeremiah, we find this promise of God: “If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me.” (Jeremiah 29:13)
The Holy Spirit came upon John Wesley. God’s Spirit is still with us today, touching lives, drawing individuals to Christ, empowering believers to be faithful witnesses.
I certainly don’t have all the answers, that's for sure. But I know the Holy Spirit is real. He is active. He is wanting to be a vital and active part of our lives this day. What are we waiting for?
