Goat For Dinner

I like the story about a young couple who invited their somewhat elderly pastor over for Sunday dinner. The parents were in the kitchen getting everything ready for the meal.

As they were doing this, the pastor visited with their child. In the course of their conversation, he asked him what they were having to eat. The kid responded, "Goat." The pastor said, "Goat? Are you sure about that?" "Yes sir," said the youngster. "I heard dad say to mom, 'Today is a good day to have the old goat for dinner.'"

Do you ever feel like an old goat? I guess we all have days like that. Days that we feel like we aren’t worth too much. Days that we wonder, “What’s the use?”

You are certainly not alone. The Psalms are full of statements of despair. Consider these honest statements from Psalm 88: “I am overwhelmed with troubles.” “I am confined and cannot escape.” “My eyes are dim with grief.” “Darkness is my closest friend.”

The “feeling like an old goat” syndrome can sure come to our lives. But God’s word offers encouragement for us.

Consider this beautiful promise from the Old Testament: “Fear not, for I am with you. Don’t be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will uphold you with my victorious right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10)

Good news for us. Encouraging news for us. Even on days that we feel like an old goat.
