Are you feeling like a dud? - - by Rev. Weldon Bares

I love chocolate. My favorite candy bar changes from week to week. It is currently the chocolate mint patty. I know a lot of people who prefer “Milk Duds.”

Did you know that Milk Duds came about because of a mistake?

The year was 1926. Hue and Company in Chicago, the original producers of the product, was trying to make a perfectly round chocolate-covered caramel. The project was a failure. One of the employees called their mistakes “duds.” Not wanting a total loss, the company decided to sell the “duds” anyway and get some of their money back. They were surprised at what happened. People loved these “duds.” So the company kept making them. The name and the candy have been popular ever since.

Sometimes even our mistakes can be of value. It sounds like a cliche, but it’s true: victory can come out of defeat. Success can come from failure. God can use even our mistakes for something good.

General George S. Patton once said, “Success is how high you bounce when you hit bottom.”

The world might call us a “dud,” but God calls us His child. We have Someone who believes in us. Scripture tells us that our Creator encourages us and lifts us up. The Apostle Paul affirmed, “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31)

Are you going through a rough period today? Are you, perhaps, feeling like a real dud? Don’t give up. Trust God. Perhaps something really good will come from this.
