Father's Day & Remembering - - by Rev. Weldon Bares

June 16, 2015

In going through some boxes of old and saved items from my parent’s house the other day, I came across an old Father’s Day card that I had given to my dad back when I was ten years old. The card made me smile for a minute . . . and remember.

I sure wish that I could give him another card this Father’s Day. He passed away earlier this year at the age of 92. But I think about him all the time.

I remember his patience. I remember his steadiness. I remember his sense of humor. I remember his fairness. He was so good to his five sons, and our mother.

We read in the Ten Commandments, “Honor your father and your mother.” (Exodus 20:12) I am determined that I will never forget. I will always treasure and honor him.

Father’s Day reminds me of something else that we should never forget. We have a Heavenly Father, a Creator, who loves us with a love that is utterly beyond our comprehension.

The Apostle Paul wrote, “And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is.” (Ephesians 3:18)

God’s love has no conditions, no strings attached. God’s love is always present. God’s love never gives up. Ever.

This Sunday as we give thanks for our fathers, let’s remember our Heavenly Father, and His incredible love for each of us.
