"Who Do You Say I Am" - - by Rev. Weldon Bares

A recent issue of Time Magazine was entitled, “The Answers Issue.” (July 6, 2015)

From cover to cover, it was full of questions and answers about modern-day life in various categories.

- - What percentage of U.S. homes have an air conditioner? (90 percent)

- - What’s the world’s deadliest creature? (The mosquito)

- - How many newspapers are on Warren Buffet’s daily reading list? (Six) How many emails has he ever written? (One)

- - How many hours a day does Serena Williams spend on the court? (Three)

- - What time does the Dalai Lama wake up? (3 AM)

I had a tough time putting the magazine down. “How do you get a stupid song out of your head?” “Which country has the fastest Internet?” “What’s the healthiest fast food?” “Where’s the safest place to sit on a plane?”

Questions have a way of getting our attention.

Jesus asked an important question one day to Simon Peter. I believe that across the centuries he asks the same question to us. Here is the question. “And what about you? Who do you say that I am?” (Matthew 16:15)

Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.”

Questions make us think and struggle. May the question of Jesus today really make us think about his claims, about his teachings, about his miracles. May we hear Jesus whisper the question to us, “Who do you say that I am?”
