Getting Rid of God? - - by Rev. Weldon Bares

During the violent and bloody French Revolution, some were so intent on abolishing Christianity. The story is told that one night an atheist revolutionary loudly proclaimed his beliefs to an older man from the country.

The atheist said, “One day, everything will be abolished. Churches, clergy, Bibles, even the word ‘God’ itself. We are going to remove everything which speaks of religion.”

The older man laughed quietly. The atheist demanded, “Why do you laugh?”

The poor man answered by pointing to the stars and saying, “I was just wondering how you and your crew would manage to get them down!”

He was so right. The stars point to God. The mountains point to God. The trees point to God. The birds, the flowers point to God. All of creation is a witness to the Almighty Creator.

The Old Testament book of Nehemiah affirms, “You alone are the Lord. You have made the heavens. The heaven of heavens with all their host, the earth and all that is on it, the sea and all that is in them. You give life to all of them.” (Nehemiah 9:6)

The Psalmist said it like this, “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims His handiwork.” (Psalm 19:1)

Some in our culture today would love to get rid of everything that speaks of God. Like the man in France many years, I point to the stars and say, “I am just wondering how you will manage to get them down.”
