"It Made Itself . . . " - - by Rev. Weldon Bares

August 9, 2016

Many years ago the famous astronomer, Johannes Kepler, was concerned about a friend who denied the reality of God. His friend claimed that the world came into existence by itself. It just happened.

The great astronomer decided on a project to make a point to his atheist friend. He constructed a large and elaborate model of the sun with the planets circling around it.

When his friend went into the observatory and saw the beautiful, detailed model, he commented with joy, "How beautiful it is! Who made it? Who worked so hard?" Kepler casually answered, "No one made it; it made itself. It all just came together."

His friend looked at him and said, "Nonsense, tell me who made it." Kepler then answered, "My friend, you say that this little model could not make itself. But this is only a weak imitation of this great universe which, I understand, you believe did make itself." Mr. Kepler made an excellent point.

Louis Pasteur, the father of microbiology, once said, “The more that I study nature, the more I stand amazed at the work of the Creator.”

The step of faith goes a little further. Not only do we believe in the existence of a Creator, but we believe that this Creator is knowable; that He cares about His creation. The Creator  has revealed Himself to His creation and loves us in a way that we cannot begin to fathom.

I saw a bumper sticker the other day that declared: "God is not dead. I talked with Him this morning!" What kind of faith do YOU have in God?
