"If Dogs Trained People" - - by Rev. Weldon Bares

March 25, 2017

I always enjoy watching the Westminster Dog Show. It was first held on May 8, 1877. It’s actually the second longest continually held sporting event in this country, right behind the Kentucky Derby, first held in 1875.

Watching the show reminded me of an email that somebody sent me some time ago. It was entitled, “If Dogs Trained People.” It has some really good observations that I would like to share with you.

If dogs trained people, we would learn things like:

When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.

Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy.

Take naps and stretch before rising.

Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.

No matter how often you’re scolded, don’t buy into the guilt thing and pout. Run right back and make friends.

Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.

     Be loyal.

If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.

When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by and nuzzle them gently.

Good words. Come to think of it, my dog, Max, is patient with me and has sure taught me a lot.

Today, let’s thank God for the many wonderful gifts of creation, including animals who are loyal companions.
