"The Most Important Prayer" - - by Rev. Weldon Bares

March 29, 2017

I have had the privilege of going to the Holy Land several times. One of the highlights for me last year was visiting the Garden of Gethsemane on the Mount of Olives, outside of Jerusalem. This ancient garden has some olive trees that are judged to be over two thousand years old.

Armenian, Greek, Latin, and Russian churches point to this olive grove on the western slope of the Mount of Olives as the authentic site. According to the Gospels, on the last night of his life, Jesus and his disciples crossed the Kidron Valley and came to this garden, where he prayed.

His prayer that night was one of great intensity.  “Father, if you will, take this cup away from me. Not my will, however, but yours be done.” (Luke 23:42)

I cannot quite explain how meaningful it was to be in the place where Jesus prayed that night. It was comforting. It was personally challenging. I found myself praying silently the prayer that Jesus prayed, “Father, not my will, but yours be done.”

Think about your life today. Are you facing something in your family, at work, in your personal life; something that troubles or frightens you? I encourage you to pray, THY WILL BE DONE. Trust God. God always does the right thing. God sees the whole picture. God has all of eternity to make things right. A peaceful garden on the other side of the world reminded me of a most important prayer, “Thy will be done.”
