"A Feisty Witness for Christ" - - by Rev. Weldon Bares

May 14, 2017

Several years ago I was the pastor of the United Methodist Church in Plaquemine. It was a fine little church. One of the leaders in the church was a somewhat feisty older woman. Her name was Helen.

I think back to a Friday afternoon when she called me on the phone at home. She was crying. She had been to the grocery store earlier in the day. As she was walking back to her car, a young man ran up to her and hit her in the face. He knocked her to the ground and stole her purse.  Understandably, she was so upset by all of this. And so we talked about it and we prayed about it.

A couple of days later, on Sunday morning during the church service, she raised her hand right before our time of prayer. Her face was black and blue from what had happened.

Helen said, “Brother Weldon, I want us to pray for the young man who hurt me and robbed me, that God will touch his life, because he is so troubled.” And she was right.

Helen was a good and faithful witness for Christ, even in days that were rough and painful for her. I sure want to be like that. Perhaps that is your prayer also.

Jesus said, “But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” (Matthew 5:44)

The years have come and gone. Helen has since passed away, but her witness still remains with me through the years, a feisty and faithful witness for Christ.
