"Can Intelligent People Believe in God?" - - by Rev. Weldon Bares

I heard someone on television recently claim that belief in God is the result of ignorance and contributes to ignorance. That came across to me as a little bit surprising considering the fact that the first 126 colleges and universities in this country were established by devout believers in God. This claim belies the fact that among the most brilliant minds in history are those who have believed in God.

Perhaps the greatest scientist who ever lived was Sir Isaac Newton. Sir Isaac Newton strongly believed in the existence of God. He wrote, “The most elegant system of the sun, planets, and comets, could not have arisen without the design and dominion of an intelligent and powerful being.”

Francis Collins is the director of the National Institutes of Health. He wrote, “The God of the Bible is also the God of the genome (an organism’s complete set of DNA). God can be found in the cathedral or in the laboratory.” His book, “The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief” was a New York Times bestseller.

Sir James Jeans, a brilliant English physicist, astronomer, and mathematician proclaimed, “From the intrinsic evidence of his creation, the Great Architect of the universe now begins to appear as a pure mathematician.”

In our modern culture, disdain is sometimes heaped upon those who believe in God. The Bible only makes one comment about someone who denies the existence of God. It is very simple. Look it up when you get a chance. It is found in the 14th Psalm, verse 1.
