"Talk About Close . . ." - - by Rev. Weldon Bares

September 11, 2017

Whew, that was a close call. Several weeks ago I was driving on US 165 in Alexandria, headed for Lake Charles. It was raining that night. I came to a stop at a red light.

When the light turned green I proceeded, but a speeding truck coming towards me ran his red light. Because of the limited visibility I saw him at the last second. I slammed on my brakes and he swerved to the side of the road, throwing gravel and debris on my car. I don’t think he ever slowed down. I didn’t even have time to blow my horn.

He missed me by about three feet. Talk about a close call. I don’t know how long I drove in silence after that, but it was a long time. I thanked God over and over again for the mercy of those three feet.

Don Henley wrote and sang, “In a New York minute, every thing can change.” Isn’t that the truth? In the blink of an eye, life can suddenly change and everything is different.

I was reminded of the passage from James 4:14, “Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.”

Whew, that was a close call. It certainly got my attention. Close calls will do that.
