Several years ago I saw a little mouse run behind the refrigerator at the parsonage. I couldn't believe it. A mouse in my house! I set a couple of mouse traps but couldn't catch him. He was too smart for that. Then I bought a glue trap, a large piece of cardboard, covered with thick, heavy glue. I put it in the kitchen, but he never walked on the trap, until someone gave me a little tip on mouse-catching.
This person suggested that I place a large chunk of peanut butter right in the middle of it. So that is exactly what I did. The next evening I came home and guess what I discovered? The mouse was trapped on that glue pad. He was hopelessly stuck because he wanted that peanut butter so much.
I won't tell you exactly what happened to that mouse. I didn't do it. I couldn't do it. I felt sorry for that little mouse. I had to call someone to come over and execute the mouse. It was pretty quick, but that mouse went to meet his Maker.
That mouse fell for the oldest trick in the book. It’s a trick as old as the Garden of Eden. Something enticing was placed before him, but the consequences were deadly.
The evil one often does that to us. He can make something so wrong and sinful appear to be so good and so enticing. But the end result is always the same . . . disaster. May God open our eyes today to the danger of temptation and to the deadly consequences of sin.
