"In Awesome Wonder" - - by Rev. Weldon Bares

January 15, 2018

I sometimes come across people who think they have God all figured out. They really believe they have the answer to every eternal question. Okay, sure.

A brilliant theologian from the early church by the name of Origen wrote, “Even the purest and brightest human understanding cannot comprehend God’s nature.” (First Principles 1.1)

Thomas Aquinas was one of the finest Roman Catholic theologians. He never completed his massive work, the “Summa Theologica.” After a very personal and intense experience with God one night, he humbly wrote, “I can write no more, for everything I have written is straw.”

I love the writings of Brennan Manning. He wrote, “God is Unique, Uncreated, Infinite, Totally Other than we are. He surpasses and transcends all human concepts, considerations and expectations. He is beyond anything that we can intellectualize or imagine.” (“The Relentless Tenderness of Jesus,” 2004)

The Apostle Paul said, “Oh, how great are God’s riches and wisdom and knowledge. How impossible it is for us to understand his decisions and his ways! For who can know the Lord’s thoughts?” (Romans 11:33)

If we really think that we have God all figured out, if we fool ourselves into thinking that we have all the answers . . . okay, sure.

The hymn writer said it well, “O Lord, my God, when I in awesome wonder, consider all the worlds Thy hand has made . . . How great Thou art, how great Thou art.”
