"An Evening Questionnaire" - - by Rev. Weldon Bares

February 7, 2018

John Fletcher was a Methodist preacher and theologian in the late 1700's. He was the most influential person in Methodism, next to John and Charles Wesley. He was a devout Christian. In fact, during his lifetime he was known as the "Sainted Fletcher."

When he went to bed each evening, he would ask of himself several questions. He called it his “Evening Questionnaire.” Perhaps we would benefit from considering some of these questions today:

Did I awake this morning spiritual?

Have I this day gotten nearer to God in prayer?

Has my faith been weakened by unwatchfulness?

Have I walked by faith, and seen God in all things?

Have I made the most of my time?

Have I denied myself in all unkind words and thoughts?

Have I been delighted at seeing others preferred?

What have I done this day for souls and bodies of God’s dear saints?

Have I laid out anything to please myself when I might have saved the money for the cause of God?

Do my life and conversation adorn the Gospel of Jesus Christ?

This evening, may God help us to pray along with the psalmist, “I will lie down in peace, and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.” (Psalm 4:8)
