"The Most Wonderful Gift" - - by Rev. Weldon Bares

May 14, 2018

Several years ago in Oxford, England, some scholarly men were discussing Christianity and exactly why it was so unique.

Then C.S. Lewis, the brilliant writer and thinker, walked into the room. He sat down and listened to the debate.

He finally spoke up and said, “What is all this ruckus about?” Someone said, “We are debating the question of what is unique about Christianity.” “Oh, that's easy,” Lewis said, “it's grace.”

The room got quiet. C.S. Lewis pointed out that  Christianity uniquely claims that God’s love comes with no strings attached. No other religion in the world makes that claim.

C.S. Lewis had an excellent point. Only Christianity dares to proclaim that God's love is unconditional. It something that we call grace. It is the undeserved, unearned, amazing love of God.

The Apostle Paul wrote, “For by grace are you saved through faith. This is not from yourselves. This is the gift of God, not by works, so no one can boast.” (Ephesians 2: 8-9)

A former slave trader in 1779 by the name of John Newton wrote some words that Christians have been singing for centuries: “Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me.”

Have you ever experienced the amazing love of God? You cannot earn it or buy it. You will never deserve it. It is simply a gift, with no strings attached. In fact, it’s the most wonderful gift in the world!
