"One of the Greatest Books in the Bible" - - by Rev. Weldon Bares

May 28, 2018

Back in January, Rolling Stone Magazine had an interesting story on Bono, the lead singer of the famous rock band from Ireland, U2. (January 11-25, 2018)

Bono made it clear that he believes in God, and that he is a Christian. He also said, “I read the Psalms of David all the time. They are amazing. He is the first blues-man, shouting to God, ‘Why did this happen to me?’ But there’s honesty in that too.”

I also love the book of Psalms in the Old Testament. I read one of the Psalms every day.

It is a book of poetry and worship. It’s a very honest book that shows the feelings and the struggles of the person who is writing. Most of it was written by King David, the king of Israel.

It has poetry that’s better than Shakespeare or John Milton. It has spiritual songs that are greater than anything by Fannie Crosby or Charles Wesley. It has deep theology and honest struggles. It goes through dark valleys and soars on the mountaintops. I personally believe that it’s one of the greatest books in all the Bible.

Sir Francis Bacon, the great philosopher from England, once said, “Some books are to be tasted, others are to be swallowed, and some few are to be chewed and digested.” The Bible is such a book, especially the book of Psalms.

I’m beginning this Sunday a series of messages on “Summer in the Psalms.” If you are not active in a church, I invite you to join us as we focus on this most meaningful book in God’s word. I also invite you to join with me in reading one Psalm every day!
