"Standing for Something" - - by Rev. Weldon Bares

I like the old story about a man who kept falling asleep in church during the sermon. His pastor was getting a little bit frustrated with him. He decided that he was going to teach the older man a lesson. He started preaching one Sunday morning and, sure enough, the man closed his eyes and went to sleep. So the pastor quietly said to the congregation, "Okay, everyone who wants to go to Heaven, stand up." Everybody stood up, except, of course, the man who was sleeping.

Then the preacher had everyone sit down. And then he quietly said, "Okay, everyone who wants to go to Hell . . ." and then he pounded on the pulpit and shouted, "STAND UP!"

The sleeping man woke up and immediately jumped up to his feet as everybody around started to laugh. He looked around at all the people sitting around him. Then he looked at the pastor and said, "Preacher, I don't know what I’m voting on. But it seems like you and me are the only ones for it."

The story makes us smile. But the truth of the matter is that sometimes we have to stand up for something.

It is the faith of churches all across our community that God offers to us a solid ground on which to stand, a sure-footing. The Lord can help us to stand for something positive and meaningful in life.

There's an old saying: "If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything."

What are you standing for today?
