"A Small Victory" - - by Rev. Weldon Bares

August 15, 2018

My dog, Max, is a bird dog. He is officially an Italian Spinone. He is also a rescue. Adopting him is one of the best things I’ve ever done.

Poor old Max. He keeps trying and trying to catch something. He almost caught a rabbit the other evening. I was chatting with him in the backyard when he took off like a bat out of Hades towards a large rabbit in the middle of the yard. The rabbit bolted for a small hole in the fence and barely made it out before Max got to him.

He finally did catch something a few days ago, early in the morning as we were walking to get the morning newspaper. He lunged at something and caught it, and then held it in his mouth. I quickly looked and saw that it was a baby possum. It wasn’t easy, but I made him turn it loose.

I don’t know if this really counts for something for Max. After all, it was a baby. And possums are nearly blind. And it was a possum that was actually playing possum.

But he finally did catch something and he turned it loose at my command. So I patted him on the head and said, “What a good boy.”

For the rest of the day, Max walked around with a spring in his step and his head a little bit higher.

Sometimes even a small victory can be good for us. May God give you one today!
