A rock band called Foo Fighters has been around since 1994, starting out in Seattle. It was founded by Dave Grohl, who was the drummer for Nirvana. Over the course of the band’s career, four of their albums have received Grammy Awards for Best Rock Album.
One of my favorite songs by the group is entitled, “These Days.” The opening lyrics are profound: “One of these days the ground will drop from beneath your feet. One of these days your heart will stop and play its final beat. One of these days the clocks will stop and time won’t mean a thing.”
During his funeral, the daughter of Senator John McCain quoted a line from her father’s favorite book, “For Whom The Bells Toll,” by Ernest Hemmingway: “The world is a fine place and worth the fighting for and I hate very much to leave it.” But we will. We surely will.
The writer of the book of Hebrews in the New Testament affirmed, “It is appointed unto man once to die, and after this the judgment.” (Hebrews 9:27) As the song goes, “One of these days, your heart will stop and play its final beat.”
As someone who believes and trusts in Christ, I don’t worry about that day, or even fear it. But I sure want to be ready for it. It’s a fact of life: One of these days the clocks will stop and time won’t mean a thing.
We have today. With God’s help, let’s make it count for something good!
