"Third Grade Sunday School Teacher" - - by Rev. Weldon Bares

October 15, 2018

It’s funny how some things stick in your mind and never leave. One of those things for me was a Sunday morning at my home church a long time ago. In my third grade class that morning Mrs. Nolan told us that the Bible is the most important book in the whole world. She told us that it is God’s book. To emphasize the point she placed a Bible on the table and then placed a hymn book and two other books on top of the Bible. Then she kind of raised her voice and told us that was wrong to do. She pointed out, “No book should ever be placed on top of the Bible. It is the most important book.”

Her point stuck with me. I don’t know that it’s wrong to literally place a book on top of the Bible, but in our heart, God’s book should always be number one. That was her point. I have forgotten a lot of math lessons, geography lectures, television shows and sermons. But that Sunday School lesson has never left me.

I used to enjoy seeing Mrs. Nolan every once-in-a-while in church during times I would come home to Lafayette. She would always give me a hug and a smile. When she would do that, I would always feel like her third grade pupil once again, a good feeling.

But those days are now gone. The book of Hebrews talks about a cloud of witnesses that surround us. I know she is there in that great cloud of witnesses on the other side, cheering us on. And she is still pointing to that book, the most important book in the whole world.

I’m thankful today for a faithful Sunday School teacher who made a difference in my life.
