I clipped an article from the Wall Street Journal recently. The headline says, “The Family Who Missed the Miracle.” The story is about the greatest play of the NFL season this year. It took place two weeks ago in the last seconds of the Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots game. With NO time left on the clock and the Dolphins losing by 5, they had this razzle-dazzle, double-lateral last-second play that went for 70 yards and the touchdown and the win. It was unbelievable. I can’t quit watching the replay. I sure wish the Cowboys could do something like that!
But the family in the article, big Dolphin fans, the Yale family - - Matt, Grant, Lila and Debra - - didn’t see the dramatic play because Mr. Yale, the father, wanted to beat the traffic. He insisted on leaving early. He figured the game was lost and there was no way the Dolphin were going to come back. The seven-year-old son, Grant, who wanted to stay, was very unhappy with his father. And so the headline in the national newspaper says, “The Family Who Missed the Miracle.” (WSJ, December 14, 2018, page A14)
Today, don’t be the family who misses the miracle of what happened in Bethlehem so many years ago. Don’t be the person who misses the miracle of God’s love. The hymn writer proclaimed, “This, this is Christ the King, whom shepherds guard and angels sing.” It’s right in front of us. Don’t miss it.
