"Over-thinking Things" - - by Rev. Weldon Bares

January 27, 2019

One of the most popular songs of my growing-up years was written by Glenn Frey and Jackson Browne and sung by the Eagles, “Take It Easy.” It features the words, “Don’t let the sound of your own wheels drive you crazy.” I am sure guilty of that. Way too often, I over-think things and let the sound of my own wheels drive me a little tiny bit crazy.

The great Russian writer, Fyodor Dostoevsky, wrote in his book, Notes From the Underground, “To think too much is a disease.” That is pretty strong, but it’s so true.

One of the greatest actors of our generation is Anthony Hopkins. Here is what he said about this, “We are dying from over-thinking. We are slowly killing ourselves by thinking about everything.”

It doesn’t have to be that way. In fact, it shouldn’t be that way. The New Testament book of Philippians chapter 4, verse 6 is a wonderful Bible verse to read and think about if we are stressed and find ourselves over-thinking something. The Apostle Paul wrote, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

Today, don’t let the sound of your own wheels drive you crazy!
