"Feeling Like a Loser?" - - by Rev. Weldon Bares

July 8, 2019

In 1965 the Beatles had a song with the words, "I'm a loser. I'm a loser. And I'm not what I appear to be." Have you ever felt that way?

Consider three quotations. Quotation number one: "I am now the most miserable man living. To remain as I am is impossible. I must die or be better." Quotation number two: "So if you are going to deal thus with me, please kill me at once." Quotation number three: "It is enough, O Lord, take away my life."

It sounds like these three statements come from three losers, right? Obviously, these three must have been no good to anyone. They must have been useless individuals. Right?

Not quite. The first quotation is from Abraham Lincoln, considered by many to be our greatest President. The second quotation is from Moses, the great leader of Israel who led thousands of slaves from Egypt to freedom. The third quotation is from the prophet Elijah, the powerful prophet of the Old Testament.

Can great things come from people who have experienced failure and hit rock bottom? The answer is yes. Great things often come from people who have been down and out. The important thing is to keep on going and to never give up.

I would say this word today to anyone who feels like a loser: You are in good company. Lincoln, Moses, Elijah. They were failures at one time, but they never gave up. With the help of God, we can do the same!
