E. Stanley Jones was a famous Methodist missionary to India for many years. But during this time, he had health struggles that nearly ended his ministry.
I recently read his book entitled, “The Christ of the Indian Road.” In the book, he told about one of his darkest hours. In this time of struggle, in a time of prayer, he heard a Voice speak to him in his heart. The Voice said, “Are you yourself ready for this work to which I have called you?” Jones answered, “No, Lord, I am done for. I have reached the end of my rope.”
The Voice replied, “If you will turn that over to me and not worry about it, I will take care of it.” Jones answered, “Yes, Lord, I close the bargain right here and now.”
Here is the witness of E. Stanley Jones: “A great peace settled into my heart and pervaded me. I knew it was done! Life, abundant life, had taken possession of me. I was so lifted up that I scarcely touched the road as I quietly walked home that night. Every inch was holy ground.”
Perhaps someone reading this today feels like he is at the end of his rope. May the witness of a missionary to India give you encouragement. May the grace and mercy of God touch our lives once again. There is hope, even if we feel like we are at the end of our rope.
