"All Things Must Pass" - - by Rev. Weldon Bares

George Harrison was known as the “quiet Beatle.” He released some really fine albums in his post-Beatle career, including "Dark Horse," "Living in the Material World," and "Brainwashed." My favorite album of George Harrison is the triple-album entitled, “All Things Must Pass,” released in 1970.

The title track of the album has some profound words, based on the writings of Lao-Tzu, an ancient Chinese philosopher who lived in the 6th century, B.C.

The lyrics are: “Sunrise doesn’t last all morning. A cloudburst doesn’t last all day. Seems my love is up and has left you with no warning. It’s not always going to be this gray. All things must pass. All things must pass away.”

Harrison reminds us of life’s great inevitability. So does holy Scripture. The writer of Hebrews in the New Testament proclaimed, “Everyone must die once and after that be judged by God.” (9:27)

The psalmist prayed, “So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.” (Psalm 90:12)

We don’t like to think about it or talk about it, but we are foolish if we don’t. That day is inevitable. Recognizing that “all things must pass,” may God give us the grace to live each day to the fullest, to trust in Christ, to forgive each other, and to prepare for the day that is ultimately coming.
