"Ready to Throw in the Towel?" - - by Rev. Weldon Bares

When she was thirty years old, she was ready to throw in the towel. She wrote in her diary these words, “My God, what will become of me? I have no desire but to die.” She said that every night she would go to bed wishing to not wake up in the morning. “Unconsciousness is all I desire. I remain in bed as long as I can, for what have I to wake for?”

But eventually, things changed, and she found a new direction in life. She lived a long and good life, dying at the age of ninety. Her amazing life brought relief to so many suffering people in the 19th century, especially to soldiers in the Crimean War. Her name? Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing.

Consider someone else. He was a young attorney many years ago in Illinois who struggled with the darkness of depression. He wrote during this time in his life, “I am now the most miserable man living. Whether I shall ever be better I cannot tell. I’m afraid that I shall never be better.” He had his victories and defeats, but he persisted and he became one of the most loved presidents in American history, Abraham Lincoln.

Perhaps someone reading this today is experiencing a dark time. I just want to encourage you to not give up hope. With the help of God, things can change. Things can turn around. Hang in there.
