"The Last Dance" - - by Rev. Weldon Bares

May 18, 2020

I have really been enjoying “The Last Dance” on ESPN. This 10-part series focuses on the life and career of Michael Jordan, leading up to his last year with the Chicago Bulls.

What an amazing career. He played 15 seasons in the NBA, winning six championships with the Bulls. Most consider him to be the greatest basketball player of all time.

I came across something that Michael Jordan once said in an interview. He observed, “I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career, I’ve lost more than 300 games, and 26 times I’ve been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. Throughout my life and career I’ve failed and failed and failed again. And that’s why I succeed.”

And Michael Jordan certainly succeeded. He holds the NBA record for regular season scoring average with 30. The most NBA scoring titles with 10. The most points in a playoff game with 63.  The most free throws completed with 1,463. The most consecutive NBA scoring titles with 7. The list could go on for quite a while.

My point is this: in spite of failure, he was a great success. Or, as MJ said, because of failure, he was a great success.

If you are struggling with failure today, let me encourage you to remember this truth: failure does not have to be final. A winner is someone who keeps on getting up and keeps on going.

The Apostle Paul said, “I press on . . . “ (Philippians 3:14) I am so thankful today that God’s amazing grace can help us to overcome failure.
