"Praying in the Valley" - - by Rev. Weldon Bares

Somebody wrote a letter to the Wall Street Journal that was published last week: “As a front-line medical professional, I would often pray under my mask and face shield. During a code blue, as I was praying, I didn’t realize that I was praying loud enough for others to hear. The odd thing was that two of my colleagues actually asked me to pray louder so they could hear. I kept saying Psalm 23:4, ‘Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for Thou art with me.’ Everyone said that it gave them a sense of peace that was very much needed under the circumstances.” (WSJ, June 3, 2020, page A14)

I love the words of the Apostle Paul: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” (Philippians 4:6)

The Bible encourages us to “pray without ceasing.” In good times and times of struggle. When things are going our way or when nothing is going our way. On the mountaintop or in the valley. Even in the valley of the shadow of death. “Pray with ceasing.”

Prayer really does make a difference. It makes a difference for us. It makes a difference for those around us. A front-line medical worker is our witness today.
