"Seeing an Old Friend" - - by Rev. Weldon Bares

July 6, 2020

An old friend from high school dropped in to see me the other day. I hadn’t seen him in years. He had changed a little bit, but not all that much.

I thought about the changes that have taken place in my life since I received that diploma from the Lafayette Parish Superintendent of Schools. Some changes are for the better. But not all of the changes have been good.

Things have changed. I am a little heavier now than when I graduated. My hairstyle is different because of less to work with. I think I'm a little more knowledgeable now. I'm not as well-versed in algebra and biology, but I am wiser about other things.

I've learned since then that I sure don't have all of the answers. I'm not nearly as smart as I thought I was. I have more questions now. Things do not always seem to be black and white like they did when I was eighteen.

I seem to have more confidence now than when I was walking on the stage to receive my diploma. But yet, at times, my confidence isn't half what it was then. I was never the life of the party.  But life, somehow, seems so much more enjoyable now.

Things change. Life changes. Sometimes for the best. Sometimes not. Visiting with an old friend reminded me of that.

In the midst of change one thing is certain: the presence of Christ. The scripture says it like this, "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." (Hebrews 13:8) That never changes.
