"COVID-19 and Praying for Wisdom" - - by Rev. Weldon Bares

As a pastor, the most difficult part of this COVID-19 pandemic that we are going through has been the limitations it has put on pastoral care. I am not allowed to do some things for my church members that I was previously able to do.

For example, a faithful friend and church member told me about being scheduled for surgery this week. Prior to this pandemic, I would have gone to the hospital on the morning of the surgery to pray for the procedure and for healing. Because of the situation that we are in, I cannot do that. I understand the limitations, but it makes me sad.

Another church member is in a care facility and having some struggles. Under normal circumstances, I would go to visit this person and pray for him.

So what to do? I use the telephone now a lot more. I also use email and text messaging a lot more.

Challenging days call for creative responses. So, personally, I am calling upon the truth of James chapter 1, verse 5: “If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and God will give it you.” I am praying every day for wisdom.

In addition to praying for our front-line health care workers, which is so important, let me humbly ask that you join with me in also praying for the pastors in our community as we seek to offer God’s peace and grace to those who are hurting. May God give to all of us wisdom.

You are invited to worship at First Methodist: Sundays, 9:00 & 11:00AM Corner of Broad and Kirkman www.fumclc.org
