I am so glad that baseball is finally back. Baseball lore has always fascinated me.
I love one particular story that goes back to the opening day of baseball in 1954. On that day, the Cincinnati Reds were playing the Milwaukee Braves. Two rookies played that day for the very first time.
The Reds’ player, Jim Greengrass, got 4 hits in the game. Each hit went for a double. What a great beginning for Jim. But the rookie for the Braves that day went 0 for 4. All day long, he went without a hit. But that was only the first day of his career.
Now today, all these years later, who is it that people remember when it comes to these two baseball players? Jim Greengrass, who got 4 doubles that day? Or could it be, perhaps, Hank Aaron, who got NO hits that day, but who went on to set many major league records in his career.
The important thing, the crucial thing, is not how you start, but how you finish. The challenge of holy scripture to our lives is to finish well.
The Apostle Paul said, “I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race. I have kept the faith.” (II Timothy 4:7) Today, let’s remember the truth: it is not how you start, but how you finish!
