I love the writings of G. Campbell Morgan. I especially love his background story.
In 1888, he was a candidate for the ministry in his church. He had passed every exam, except for one, his trial sermon.
G. Campbell Morgan had to preach his sermon in a huge sanctuary that seats one thousand people. Three preachers were there, along with 75 other people who came to listen. But that day, he was not up to the job. Two weeks later, his name appeared in a list of those who were turned down for the ministry of the church.
Right away, he sent a telegram to his father with one word, "Rejected." He wrote these words in his journal that night, "Very dark everything seems. Still, He knoweth best." His father immediately sent back a telegram: "Rejected on earth. Accepted in Heaven. Dad."
But this young man persisted. He went to another denomination and became a great preacher of the faith. He served as a pastor for 55 years. He became one of the greatest evangelists and Biblical scholars in the world. In his years of ministry, he preached 23,390 times and wrote over 70 books. His 4 sons all became preachers.
Many Christians down through the years could have those words carved on their tombstone: "Rejected on earth. Accepted in heaven."
I just wonder, are you feeling rejected today? If so, I encourage you to turn in faith to God. When we come to God in faith, God will never turn us away and reject us. Never. Isn’t that great news?
May the words of G. Campbell Morgan’s father encourage us today: “Rejected on earth. Accepted in heaven.”
