Someone recently asked me, “I want to be closer to God. How can I do that? What do you suggest?”
I commended this person for wanting to take this step of faith. I suggested the following things:
1) Talk to faithful Christians about their faith journey. Listen carefully and learn from their story.
2) Read the Bible regularly. I suggest reading the Gospel of John one chapter a day. Then read the other Gospels in the same way. Take your time and think about what you are reading. By reading the Gospels, you will get to know Jesus, the One it is all about.
3) Try to spend a few minutes in quiet time, in silence, every day. During this time, think about God. And then talk to God like you would speak to a person. Be honest and tell God what is on your mind and heart. Then, finish by saying the Lord’s Prayer out loud.
4) Ask God to fill you with His Holy Spirit.
5) Intentionally do something kind for someone every day. I believe that God is closest to us when we love each other.
6) Find a community of faith that welcomes everyone and that welcomes questions, even hard questions. May this faith community help your faith to grow.
In the Old Testament book of Jeremiah, God said, “You will seek me and find me when you search for me with all your heart.” (Jeremiah 29:13)
Most importantly, it is all about faith and placing our faith and trust in Christ. I pray today for those who desire to know God and are willing to take steps of faith toward our Heavenly Father.
